Best way to paint a dresser from Homegoods?

I've got a beautiful Homegoods style dresser that I picked up second hand. The dimensions were perfect and I love the curvy shape but it is black and red with hand painted flowers all over the front. I have a beachy cottage look. I'm wondering how I should go about painting it. I've never painted something new and alreay painted. I'm thinking of maybe a coat of white and then sanding here and there to let the black show through? Ot should I paint the whole thing tan, then white, then sand a bit. I love the shabby chic look, but I hate the bad faux finish look. Any ideas? I'd also love to do a two tone with a different color on the drawers but Im scared of color commitment. I've already painted the kitchen it's in 3 times. I have ivory walls, white cabinets and no other real colors that I'm tied to. Really sick of the "beach" thing....Help? Thanks!!!

Not familiar with the construction or materials used in that piece, but if it's made of solid wood, I'd sand it down to bare wood, seal it with an alkyd (oil-based) primer, sand that down just enough to eliminate brush marks when dry (4-5 days), then apply latex colour coat(s) over the primer. You can find colors that compliment your existing scheme by using a color wheel from any decent paint supply store.

I'd use a random-orbit pad sander after each coat was dry and hard to remove any brush marks, starting with 220-grit, and using progressively finer sand paper for each coat ~ 220 for first coat, then 320 for second coat, and 400 for last coat ~ then seal it all with a couple of coats of polyurethane to protect it, again sanding between coats. If you use 320-grit then 400-grit on the first polyurethane coat, and 400-grit wet-n-dry paper followed by 600-grit (or finer) on the second polyurethane coat to remove the last of the sanding scratch marks, you'll end up with a glass-like finish that will be impervious to most spills.

Most hardware stores will have the sand paper to 400-grit, but the 600-grit may have to come from an auto parts store that sells auto-body repair materials.
