Brief history of a Barcelona chair
This unique design is the product of an exclusive building requiring an exclusive interior. The Barcelona Chair was designed for the German Pavilion building, Germany's entry piece for the 1920 Ibero-American Exposition. It was co-designed between two infamous designers: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich, his companion and partner.
The design of the Barcelona chair was inspired by ancient examples, such as the x-shaped footstools of the Romans. From these influential pieces, the modern Barcelona chair was produced. The exclusivity of this chair is a product of the materials and construction processes involved; these are both detailed and labor intensive. These reasons alone have given rise to an exclusive, royalty endowed chair that has continued to endear itself to a distinctive audience as opposed to the masses. It is thus a modern classic and among the most notorious of all contemporary chairs.
The frame is made using a seamless piece of stainless steel, resulting in an incredibly smooth appearance. The chair itself is now made using Bovine leather which has replaced the ivory-colored pigskin which made-up the original covers. These chairs are currently available as Barcelona White Leather Chair and the Barcelona Black Leather Chair or with added sheik and comfort they are accompanied by a leather bound stool such as the Barcelona White Leather Chair & Footstoolor Barcelona Black Leather Chair & Footstool.
